Product Description

Cabbage Seed Germination Description

Cabbage seed germination is the process through which a cabbage seed begins to grow into a young seedling. Like other members of the Brassica family, cabbage seeds typically germinate quickly under the right conditions—usually within 4 to 10 days.

Stages of Cabbage Seed Germination:

Imbibition (Water Absorption):

The dry cabbage seed absorbs water, swells, and softens its seed coat.

This activates internal enzymes and begins metabolic activity.

Metabolic Activation:

Stored nutrients in the seed are broken down into usable energy.

Cell division and elongation begin within the embryo.

Radicle Emergence:

The radicle (embryonic root) breaks through the seed coat first.

It grows downward to anchor the plant and absorb water/nutrients.

Shoot and Cotyledon Emergence:

The hypocotyl (stem below the seed leaves) grows upward.

The cotyledons (seed leaves) emerge above the soil surface.

Plumule Development:

The plumule (embryonic shoot) appears, developing the first true leaves.

The seedling begins photosynthesis, marking the start of independent growth.

Optimal Conditions for Cabbage Germination:

Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C)

Moisture: Consistently moist soil; avoid waterlogging.

Light: Not necessary for initial germination, but needed once the cotyledons emerge.

Soil: Loose, well-draining, and nutrient-rich.
